Canine Search and Rescue Technology
Researchers at Ryerson University developed the idea of attaching top-notch sensory gear with Canine to increase the effectiveness of search and rescue missions. Ryerson researchers have been investigating the role of canine search and rescue in disaster response and the research team has developed two new products for trained search dogs: Canine Augmentation Technology II (CAT II) and Canine Remote Deployment System (CRDS). Employing existing off-the-shelf components from the realms of wireless communication, canine care, computer science, and search and rescue, the team has created an integrated system that is customized for the needs of the search and rescue community. The value of the CAT project is that it allows an extended range of contact between the canine and its handler, as well as giving the dog a means of reporting back." This strategy uses custom camera, audio and communication harnesses that enable the wireless transmission of information to a receiver carried by the handler, to another responder, or to a receiver located in the site command post. Rescue teams are able to receive real-time video of the disaster site from a dog's-eye view, as well as two-way audio. The new CAT technologies also enable search dogs to deliver equipment or supplies to a trapped victim long before emergency personnel can reach them.
