Economical Bio-insecticide for Mosquitoes
This technology is related to an economical process for producing bio-insecticides by using economical and locally available biological waste material (bird feathers) through simple fermentation technology. Bird feathers as useless wastes in poultry industries and broiler shop are dried and stored in room temperature. The dried bird feathers are mixed with water and boiled and then cooled. This bird feathers extract are then filtered through muslin cloth and pH also adjusted to Neutral. Culture of Nutrient Yeast Extracts. Mineral Salt used as basis and then the cultures of both Nutrient Yeast Extracts Mineral Salt and bird feathers extract were dispensed separately into flasks and autoclaved. Pre-cultures of Bs and Bti were inoculated in culture media and allowed to grow under constant agitation. Samples from each medium were drawn at every 6 hour up to 72 hours growth period. The crude bacterial samples containing bacterial crystals were harvested by centrifugation washed. This obtained bacterial crystals kills the insect larvae when used in concentration ranging from 0.0021 to 0.0004 mg/liter for Bacillus sphaericus Neide (Bs) and 0.00014 to 0.000025 mg/liter for Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis de Barjac (Bti).Novelty of this technology lies in culture medium comprising bird feathers which can be used for efficient and economical production of bio-insecticide to control mosquito larvae by harvesting the bacterial cells and crystal toxins.
