Activated carbon Introduction: Activated carbon is kind of carbon that has high absorbability for gases , vapors and colloidal solid in gas phase or liquid phase. Activated carbon is an important chemical matter which is applied widely for many industries that absorption of some gases and vapors are necessary for them to refine chemical reactions containing catalyst. To study an industrial place : In India , activated carbon production industry hasn’t been developed completely yet. At the present , there are 6 – 7 productive units of activated carbon that their productive capacities have been estimated 15000 tons (metric) / years. In 1970 – 1971 , about 162 tons (metric) activated carbon was imported with the value of 920000 rupees from England. This issue reveals the industrial place and the higher demand growth of this matter in future. application and usage cases : 1) activated carbon is applied widely for fading and refining liquids containing a little quantity of organic materials. 2) It is also used for refining water. 3) Activated carbon is applied for the extraction and purification of gold and silver. 4) It is applied widely as a catalyst in chemical industries. 5) It is used for the absorption of gases and vapors. 6) Activated carbon is also used in pharmaceutics industries. 7) Also it is applied in fading vegetable oils. Raw materials : Any of following raw materials are used for producing activated carbon : 1) bituminous coal 2) bones 3) lignite (brown coal that its pure carbon isn’t more than %60 - %75. 4) Peat 5) Pecan shells (an American nut tree) 6) Petroleum residue Production ways : All stages of producing activated carbon is summarized in following operations : 1) Blending raw materials 2) heating in furnace for activation 3) grinding 4) pulverizing 5) cooling 6) rinsing 7) drying activated carbon is obtained by the coalification of coconut shells , animal bones or other carbonic matters and converting them into carbon that is activated by heating at 800 or 900 ° C and is completed in the vicinity of vapor and or air , after activation , they are crushed , grinded or cooled. Then they are washed by acid for separating the ash compounds of solution and finally they are dried.
